Another Year, Another Age: Birthday of Joelliana and Jovenia

Tabi basa & greetings everyone. In this post, I’d like to share about the recent birthday of Joelliana and Jovenia at Kampung Pichin, Serian.

Birthday is a special day, especially to the young ones, where their parents would usually throw a party for them. As they grew older, some with a learned pessimism will say, it is another day closer to our departure from this plane. Having someone like that, would definitely a pain in the “kanang”, as they seems to have problem for every solution.

But we don’t have to be like those sorry human beings and we can choose to celebrate life. Our existence should be appreciated, and be cherished. As we go along in this journey of life, we often veer further away from those that was close with us during our childhood.

Those that attend the same school with us may or may not leave the path we are walking. But more often than not, we will be alone. That’s why, the ability to be alone will affect a lot of our life’s decisions.

There will be a time when we need to make a choice. Hence, we need to think of what’s good for us. Instead of preparing a fortress for our little ones, we better make them stronger so that they can face the world. Otherwise, they will stay in their own little fortress.

One way to equip with is to let them adopt some life’s responsibilities, for example, mingling around with others. The child that is well-liked when they are still young will walk a different path in life, compared to those who is not well-liked (probably due to delinquency, too naughty or trouble-makers).

It is quite simple actually. Just teach them to be polite with others. How? Leading by example. In theory it is simple, but in practice, all the best!

As usual, to make work more fun and enjoyable, it is best if we can do it together. It is something we call “gotong-royong” or simply working together in Malay language. Since they have been working together for a long time, the best part of living in a community, they know what they need to do.

Those who is expert with cooking will be the chief cook. The rest, will do their own things.

Since this is a birthday party, let’s not forget the decoration, including Dragon sticker, since this is the year of the Dragon.

The event started around 6.30pm. The guests came one by one, whilst being greeted by the birthday girl, Joelliana. Jovenia is still too young to welcome the guests, but her grandmother brings her around to meet her guests. Joelliana were having fun receiving the birthday presents from her friends, something that she didn’t get too often.

Cikgu Kennedy came to bless the party, as the representative of the Kpg Pichin Catholic Church community, while I act as the emcee & photographer. There are other tasks to do, but I only confine it to the thing that I do best.

After prayer session was completed, cake was blessed, it is time for the birthday song. Joelliana and her friends, mostly her classmates gather around the cake. It is indeed a happy moment for her.

After the birthday cake cutting was completed, it is time for dinner.

After that, Joelliana and her classmates performed their dances to the song that they like, which was initially Baby Shark, Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, and lastly, Gummy Bear.

By now, you will realise that our favourite entertainment here is karaoke session. That’s why, even if you are not a karaoke fan, but eventually, you will learn how to sing.

Those who attends take turn to sing, not to forget the special appearance of “Ella” Pichin that serenades those who attends.

Before the event ends, we took a group photo to capture this moment in time for our future self to see.

May God bless Joelliana and Jovenia.
