Lady Vivid 2021: Top 3 Finalists

Tabi basa balarantek! In this post today, I’d like to write about Lady Vivid. Lady Vivid is The Niners Management’s first event, with its objective to recruit new rookie to be their Social Media Influencer. From Lady Vivid, The Niners Management aims to create the next top young adult social influencer in Sarawak.

As for these top three finalist, they were chosen by netizen based on Instagram votings at The Niners Management. Our of twelve who registered for Lady Vivid competition, there were two plus sized participants. This is to emphasis that beauty can come in various shapes and sizes, not only for the slim ones.

To evaluate further these finalists, they were given a set of questions after their photoshoot. From their photoshoot, they were given a set of questions, where their answers can be seen below.

Interview With Top 3 Finalists

Nathasa

Hello, my name is Nasthasa binti Ali. My family member called me Shasha and some called me Nast and Tasha. I’m turning 19 on September 2. I’m currently studying at UiTM Samarahan, majoring in Office Management.

While studying, I also having a part-time job to earn extra pocket money for myself.

First of all, the main reason why I joined this Lady Vivid competition is because I wanted to boost my confidence and gain more experience. I’m the person who loves to try new things. Therefore, I guess this is a great opportunity for me to try my best this contest. I am keeping eye on a certain person – my idol. She’s a very hard working person. Even when she was pregnant, she is still doing her work diligently. Hence, she is successful in her career. She’s a very loving mother too and at the same time she’s very strict and serious person. I like the way she’s a boyish at the same time she can be so ladylike. She is Scha Alyahya.

My wildest dream is to be able to start up a small foundation to support the orphan and the unfortunate one regardless of their age, race or religion.

The challenge that I faced in life is I have strict parents. I was born in a family with all girls and that alone explains why I was guarded all through my life. Not only me but also my other siblings. It was something I liked, but at the same time something that I get annoyed at on certain time. This is because my parents trying to protect us from creating miserable mistakes that can ruin our future.

Last few days, I had my very first photoshoot with Tukang Rantek. I was a bit nervous when I was driving to the studio. Since the photographer is a guy, I afraid that I’ll get shy and couldn’t cooperate. Once I arrived the studio, he welcomed us with an open arm. He was very friendly and easy-going. At the end of the photoshoot, he shared to us about his journey which I found it was very interesting. He’s a sporting person too as we can share and give opinion about our thought.

My first impression about boudoir is of course I’m overwhelmed as I’m having a lot of mixed feeling. But I believe he can go further with his bravery and outgoing self. Because not everybody have the courage to take a picture of a half-naked model. And because of that I respect him as a photographer.

My final thought on Lady Vivid is a great avenue to boost someone’s confidence and made them feel happy with themselves. Lastly, my hope for Lady Vivid is that we can grow bigger and be a successful person in the future.

Gwen

Hi! My name is Gwyneth Eva Lai Anak Roha. I’m 21 years old. I’m a fresh graduate student from UiTM Mukah, taking Diploma in Business Studies. Currently, I’m looking for a permanent career.

At first, I never thought of joining this Lady Vivid due to my hectic schedule. But, I’m asking for my friends’ opinion about joining this virtual event. For almost one week, I keep on thinking , why not? At least I can experience how to be a model. With my curious personality, I also want to know a life of being a model. Nowadays, people tend to focus more on social media.

From there, we can see how the social media can give a big impact to the society. There is one thing, that keeps on running through my minds, I want to be a good influencer. I want to give a good impact to the society. Most of the people loves to express their feeling through social media instead of physical meeting. And the other reasons, of course is to build up my confidence level.

One of my wildest dream is to become a cat rescuer by providing them food and water as well as shelter.

Challenges that i always face is judgements from other peoples. I live in a judgemental society. It’s hard because you have to take care of everything that you do and actions that you take. Not only that, the challenges of being “me”. I love to say YES to everything. I can’t said no. It’s hard for me to reject everything since this is my personality since I was a teenager.

My first experience ever in photoshoot, was really a “lit” / exciting experience especially with Tukang Rantek. It was fun because he is so friendly. I’m really comfortable with him. We talked, we laughed & exchange thoughts et cetera. In short, it was fun.

Boudoir photoshoot is a new things for me. I started to know this kind of photoshoot since last year when Tukang Rantek started to post the boudoir pictures. I’m an open minded person. For me, it’s really a rare and good photoshoot. It taught women out there that they need to love themselves because no one will love the way you love yourself. I think Tukang Rantek can do it! I trust his passion. “Bila kita buat sesuatu benda dengan ikhlas, kita akan dapat berkatnya!” (when we do something sincerely, we will have His blessings) Keep it up!

For me, Lady Vivid, not only teaches the girls out there to be more confident in their own ways. I hopes that Lady Vivid can help those people out there to be more confident in themselves especially the girls that have a low confidence with their body.

Grace

Hi! My name is Grace Suling Belare. I’m 20 years old this year. I’m a student at College Geomatika Keningau, Sabah. The reason I’m joining this Lady Vivid because i want to become a more confident person and also I am really interested in this field of modeling and I want to be a famous model. This may sound cliché but my biggest inspiration is my mom because my mom is a hardworking person and she never complain about the hardship of life. She is also a very loving person and she have a strong belief in God.

My challenges in life is I grew up in the village my whole life and this is my first time in life going out alone and explore the city and also living alone by myself. It is not easy as I do not really have people to depend on but this taught me to handle the hardship of life as an emerging adult.

My first photoshoot experience with Tukang Rantek. He is a very sporting person and also friendly. He is able to communicate with us without being shy and it made me felt welcomed.

My first impression about boudoir challenges is to be honest I feel uncomfortable looking at a guy taking pictures of a half naked women or men. However, I tried to be an open minded person and think about it in a positive direction for a  photographer as that is also an occupation and passion for some people just like Tukang Rantek.

My final thought on Lady Vivid is it is a great experience for people who had low self esteem and always feel discouraged about oneself. This allows them to be able to believe in themselves and to be more confident.

My hope for Lady Vivid is I can get more experience that can be the one to help me in life and also to make me a better person who believes in myself.

Epilogue

This concludes the article about Lady Vivid Top 3 Finalists. Based on their interview, it seems like all of them has their own insecurity, but nevertheless, they have something to look forward to in life. May the best lady wins and bag the title Lady Vivid 2021.

Frontliner’s Love Story

Tabi basa and greeting, Tukang Rantek family.

Today I would like to write about our frontliner’s love story – Dr Gilbert and his wife, Dr Sonia, who both are part of the bigger group under Ministry of Health, where both of them are serving at Miri. Despite their busy schedule, they still find time to immortalise their love story in the form of pictures. Both of them came from Kpg Sungi Duuh, Siburan, just right beside my father’s village of Kpg Masaan. Their love story started long time ago at Sungi Duuh, and Molly Christopher, Gilbert’s neighour & cousin, is partly the mastermind behind it. The details are not permitted to be disclosed, but suffice to say, it is another reason why Gilbert is motivated to pursue excellence until both received their doctor-ship. Being Eastern peoples, Bidayuh peoples are not generally expressive, especially when it comes to love. I can see that in my father, where it took considerable effort to hold my mother’s hand in public. Gilbert and Sonia is no exception, but they are very supporting in expressing their love towards one another before the lens. No matter how busy you are, if you love one another, you can make time for one another and to express your love to them. Love is a choice – where you override logic and rationale, where you choose to stay with your loved one, in good times and the bad, in joy and sorrow and only death can part the two of you. May God bless Dr Gilbert and Dr Sonia.

Tukang Rantek’s Official T-Shirt

Tabi basa and greetings everyone! Another weekend has come to an end, but life goes on as usual. For this post, I would like to showcase the recent project that I have done with these beautiful ladies, Jill, Yusnani (Yus) and Stephine (Steph).

Tukang Rantek’s Official Shirt

I am proud to announce that Tukang Rantek finally have its own official shirt, as what you can see below. I designed it in a minimalist manner, where only the logo and Tukang Rantek word can be seen. Initially I intended to put an intricate Bidayuh motive, but in the end, as I think, I scrapped the idea.

Draft Design (Black)
Draft Design (Red)

Elley Liana who is from Legacy Jersi also helped to make this T-shirt a reality. These are the designs that she sent to me after putting into the computer-generated design.

When I receive my shirt 14-working days later, I am so excited and I called for a photoshoot with these ladies. Here are the shirts being donned in action.

Final Words

As a parting gift, these are the words of advise to all of you. I posted this one at my Instagram story, dedicated to those who is still on the fence on what they want to do in their life.

Tukang Rantek’s “Mafia” Family (2020)

Mental Liberation

If you are controlled by what others think of you, you are their mental prisoner. If you have something that you really want to accomplish, just do it. Concentrate all your effort there. Don’t be a jack-of-all-trades just because you want to impress Mr/Mrs Sanuh that lives next door who doesn’t care if you fall or broke. You like black and white photography? Just do it. Why worry about colour or camera brand? You like lifting/fitness? Just do it. Why wait for it to become a trend. You like someone? Tell him/her. What’s stopping you? If they reject you, move on. You will save yourself few precious years waiting like a helpless beta male/female. Why waste your time? In the end, it’s your family that will be there for you. If someone talks about you behind your back, let them be. You can’t please everyone no matter what you do. Therefore, do what you need to do. Have faith in yourself. You can do it. Jia you.

“If you are controlled by what others think of you, you are their mental prisoner.”

Til Death Us Do Part

Babai & Oma Last Moment Together

A lot of us want to have someone to love in our life, especially those who wants to live until the end, share our lives until old age. To like someone is the easiest part because more and more people knows how to groom themselves, apply proper make-up to beautify themselves and make them more handsome. To pretend to fall in love is easy in first encounter, because lust is often masked as love and we call it love first sight, when it’s actually hormone in action, fueled by libido. For some, love just happens. Like a spark, it just go boom. For others, it takes time. For some unfortunate ones, they are still waiting and hoping for that miracle.

To fall in love is the easy part. The real challenge is to maintain it; to maintain the same love as when we first started to fall in love.

Bidayuh Beauty: Dayung Bi-Pichin

Tabi basa/Greetings family and friends,

Today is Saturday, an opportunity to rest and to have a fun with family and friends, as well as to pursue your passion, whatever it might be. Sarawak is a land of beautiful places and peoples, consisting of many ethnics, especially Dayaks  – Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulus. For this edition, I have the opportunity to work with three beautiful ladies from my village, Kampung Pichin of Serian Division.

Dayung Bi-Pichin

Dayung means girl/woman in Bidayuh language, shared between Bukar-Sadong (Serian), Padawan and even Bau area. “Bi-” prefix means “belongs” or “of the”. In this case, Bi-Pichin means “from Pichin”, just like how Bidayuh obtain its name, meaning “People of the Land”, which is why James Brooke and friends called Bidayuh “Land Dayak”.

As a disclaimer, featured in this post is only three out of many beautiful ladies of Pichin. On July previously, I collaborated with ladies from Kpg Riih Daso for a similar photoshoot, except this time we are not using traditional garments. That one is reserved for another edition.

Samilla, Shania and Tania.

Venue: Pichin “Utak Pait” Waterfall

Pichin area is blessed with a lot of natural resources, which includes complex of limestone caves at the foot of Lenge Kiburan or even the Karu river. The venue of choice today is the old water reservoir for Pichin, used to supply fresh upriver water to the villages until it was decommissioned, following the proper water supply by Sarawak government. Utak Pait is now a popular venue for BBQ because it is a place where you can some fun with family and friends.

I remember when I was in Primary School, we love to go here with the Soo Bahk Do team, where we will have a lot of fun time playing tag at the slippery area, including the waterfall area since our tag has no rules. You can literally run around the area. It is tough for the one chasing though.

In terms of photographer’s point of view, Utak Pait is a it is a well-shaded area, and it has plenty of good soft light, which is good for portraiture if you wish to do so. That is what I am doing in this post.

Also, I have a strong preferences to do photoshoot outdoor, to showcase the beauty of the surroundings, especially of Sarawak, our Motherland. Just like how the land of four seasons photographer is proud of their natural landscape, so am I proud of the rainforest and its monsoon or dry season (I don’t like haze, it is not part of the script).

Photography Gears

In this photoshoot, I am using my favourite gears for mobile outdoor photography, my Leica M10-P black and APO-Summicron 50mm and my lighting of choice is as usual the Profoto B10 and octa-light modifier, because it is portable and easy to handle.

50mm angle has been my favourite because it creates the look that I have grew to like and love. However, not just any 50mm. APO-50 is not called the best 50mm for nothing. The colour that it created is unique, and it is the look that I really look forward to have. Having tried few Leica 50mm before, the only one that can challenge the colour of APO-50 is Noctilux 50. Out-of-camera, Summicron and Summilux 50’s colour is lacking of that “ummph”. APO-50 and Noctilux 50 is just nice. I love it.

If you ask any photographer, when given the chance, what would you upgrade? Camera body or lens? Mostly will go for lens upgrade, because body will be upgraded every year. Lens, are not. For Leica, it will take a decade to upgrade a new lens, while the camera is much more frequent than that. Leica SL2 is out, and Monochrom M10 is coming next year. Let’s see how it goes.

Photoshoot Challenges

As mentioned earlier, in the venue section, it is at the waterfall area, where its surrounding is quite wet and caution has to be exercised, because it has a lot of slippery surfaces, thanks the growth of moss patches (lumut) on the rock, especially after rain falls, turning the fun-looking area into one big hazardous zone.

Apart from the already wet area, the weather is also not very supportive due to the monsoon season. It rains multiple time throughout the photoshoot. Luckily we are well-prepared with out rain protection, though the unexpected downpour caught us by surprise while we are in the zen mode of the photoshoot.

The photoshoot which was initially planned to be dry, turns to be wet. Therefore, we improvise. I quickly remembered the image that Priscilla, founder of Divabiz Ambassadorz, sent to me. So, I tried it out. Luckily, the ladies are also supporting.

After the photoshoot session, it is time to call it a day.

Tania

This section is for Tania, who has a quite a number of experience doing photoshoot, feels at ease in front of the lens. I do not have to tell her what to do, she instinctively does her pose. All I need to is to ensure the composition and the lighting is correct.

Shania

Shania doesn’t have any experience with photoshoot like this. However, her fair complexion and tall figure makes her a good candidate for a photoshoot.

Samilla

Just like Shania, Samilla also has no experience with photoshoot. However, that doesn’t stop her from joining the fun.

Misconception Correction

I always hear from lots of my female friends that they are not good in front of camera. However, it is not true. I believe that disbelief and lack of confidence came from social conditioning, where they always compared themselves with a better-looking personnel, physically; or even in their own family where they have a better looking siblings. With the right angle and lighting, as well as timing, you can look your best. That is the trick that many selfie-lovers knows really well. Sometimes, when you arrive at a certain place, you felt that the lighting is truly good. You can literally feel like you can take the aura. That means you will be able to create great selfie using your camera.

You can look your best in your camera. All you need to do is to trust the photographer.

Way Forward

I do acknowledge that I am also still learning to improve my techniques especially in playing with light and bring out the best in my subjects. However, the thing that I really appreciate and love is the satisfaction that I get when I see the final images, and my client also shares the same appreciation. It is a good feeling indeed, and I would say, one way to make life more interesting aside from taking care of mental health.

Acknowledgement

Thank you for ladies, Tania, Shania and Samilla as well as Tukang Lampo, Fifi for making today’s photoshoot a success. Kudos to all of you for staying cheerful and bright despite the moody and gloomy sky. Let’s work again next time.
